A Thousand Doorways is the dramatic true account of a storyteller’s quest to preserve the vanishing folkloric stories of the Kurds of Turkey. Hearing of the haunting beauty of their folktales and moved by the silencing of their native language by Turkish laws, Diane embarked on a journey of intrigue and heart to find and record these last Kurdish storytellers. Protected by the Kurds, who kept this innocent project hidden from government eyes, she found herself at last in the remote mountain villages forbidden to outsiders. Here, the true stories of their lives and of their struggle, stories that could never be safely documented, began to mix with their startling mythic legends as a doorway opened onto a very different world, a fairytale landscape of shepherds, guard towers, caravans, impossible mountain passes, storytelling grandmothers and the mysterious “Eggs of the Ancient Tree.” Master storyteller and theatre artist Diane Edgecomb takes the audience to the heart of her life-changing journey, bringing to life over twenty vivid characters from her travels.
