Story Slam, Season IV in Fall 2012!
With the holidays approaching we’re bound to get stories about gift-giving ‘haps and mishaps -- but another staple of The Season is being thankful, enjoying time spent with loved ones, and generally appreciating the “present moment”. Or - feeling like it can’t end soon enough because sometimes, there just isn’t enough eggnog in the world. Bring your best (and worst), holiday (and non-holiday) stories. And sweaters.
Hey! Bring the worst present you’ve ever received, show and tell for 1 minute, and get a soft drink of your choice on us!
Host: Scott Schultz has interviewed and photographed hundreds of bands for the Los Angeles based indie rock magazine, LA Record. Scott became involved with storytelling in December, 2011, winning his first slam and competing in the Big MouthOff at Coolidge Corner Theater. In March, he was named Massmouth’s Emerging Storyteller. Scott's stories have been heard on NYC-based Yarn AudioWorks and NPR’s O’Dark 30.
What is a Story Slam? A story slam is a contest of stories by known and undiscovered talent. Themes are posted on our events pages (www.massmouth.com) and story slammers sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute short story on the evening's theme. Ten names will be drawn at random from a box. A team of 5 volunteer judges - interested amateurs, storytellers, theater people and members of the audience who love stories - evaluate how well each story is told, how well it is constructed, how well the story explores, connects and/or reveals some truth about the theme and, how well it honors the time limit. The 2 highest-scoring tellers are awarded prizes and an opportunity to progress to the "BigMouthOff" at the at the end of the slam season (Sept - April).
