Summary: Based on her work in Haiti training health workers, educators and parents working in camps and orphanages this presentation is about story, reciprocity and imagination as the means of accessing inherent presence and joy.
 
About Laura Simms:
Renowned storyteller, writer and humanitarian, Laura is presently working in Haiti with Mercy Corps. She is a senior research fellow at Rutgers University Human Rights Center. Author of five books and numerous recordings, she consults on major educational, humanitarian and healing projects. Her most recent book, Our Secret Territory: the Essence of Storytelling, is published by Sentient Books (2011).

Stories in the Streets in an outreach literacy program that focuses on families in at-risk areas and fosters community engagement in storytelling by: 1) Creating opportunities for public storytelling wherever families gather — a farmer’s market, laundromat, or food line; and, 2) Offering storytelling workshops that raise family engagement in literacy, cultural awareness and community understanding.  The program is currently active in Lawrence, Brockton and Randolph.
