Listen here to some sample entries for the first Folk And Fairy Tale slam
Slam GUIDELINES for Folk Tale Slam Debut
We reserve the right to adjust guidelines in future, as Folk Tale Slam Format evolves. Guidelines develop as program develops.
We will pick 5 tellers for each night and leave two slots for sign-up and random choice from “the hat”.
Selected tellers get in free and must arrive by 6:30pm to claim slot
This program challenges tellers of traditional stories with the following guidelines:
- tell no longer than a 7 minute story
- the story must be fiction and
- from any folk or world tradition
- the story may NOT be a literary work,
- must be the teller’s own version, in their own words, of a folk tale [random examples: Rumplestiltskin, Cinderella, Foolish Hans, Anansi tales, Giufa, etc.] and
- all story genres are permitted genres: parable, myth, legend, fable, tall tale etc.
- tellers may use poetry, props, costumes, music BUT no notes We have secured the prizes and the audience will choose winners.
A few ideas for twisting:
Change the gender of a key character
Tell the story in a new narrator's voice
Tell from different character's point of view- a fly on the wall, the wicked ogre's innermost thoughts, the axe of the woodsman...
Set in a different time and place.
Change sequence of events
Change the outcome
Change one key event in plot and use same characters, setting etc. see where it takes the story.
Want to make sure you have a spot at the slam? Start by recording one here and if selected
