Hi Norah, my fellow former cabbie! Very impressed with your bio. I must have reviewed a Revels you were in. Or more than one. I, of course, have a lot of old cabbie stories from the late 1970s, a couple of them even postive and quite magical. But one existential moment sticks out for me. I was sitting late at night at Central Square. Must have been a dead Sunday night. And I was thinking to myself: This is not me, driving this cab. I am somewhere else. I am someone else. It was meant to make me feel better about being a cabbie... instead of pursuing my hopes and trying to be a writer or a radio deejay. And then it hit me that the time you spend evaporating yourself, time not being yourself, is time emptied out of your life. It is time in a vacuum. Better to build yourself than make yourself disappear. So I then became a waiter... too busy to be alienated on the job! I was so incompetant at that, I was forced into becoming other things... including, eventually, a writer, and even, for a time, a radio deejay. Maybe I'll tell a tale sometime about being an overnight country & western deejay from midnight to six in Waltham.
I've finally noticed an invitation to be your friend. My pleasure, but so ironic that one becomes a friend by not being with someone. Like Jackson, I was a virgin to this until now!!!!
Hey Norah
Tol you I would finally get to it when I was cruising the Internet putting up info on the Solstice shows... Sorry it took so long! I love the site it is fantastic.

Thanks Norah. I was lucky to have such a great person come to my program at that school and write about it. she came to every event and hung around. A rare breed of journalist. I think it was a labor of love really. I did add you as a friend on facebook, but to be honest I don't have time to check that wall or this one with all of my jobs these days and daughter college hunting. How is your daughter btw? The one whom you worried had MS. Hope all is well. e
Ahoy Matey! That's a nice little cyber announcement that "Norah and Jackson are now friends." Glad to hear it, and to be aboard the MassMouth/ning thing. Would you believe that I've heretofore been a virgin to social networking? It's true. I look forward to future path crossings on the storytelling trail. Cheers! Jackson
Sheeeesh - what a story!!!! If the expression "bend over" become something that should not be said to children we are in some deep trouble -so sorry to hear this story. I guess you could say bend "down" ? But really - what are people thinking - ? or is thinking not the word we seek?
Sorry for your troubles
Hi Norah I also would like anyone to tell me what you think cause this broke my heart a little. My CD, Feel Your Heart's Magic, on CDBABY was going to be used as a fundraiser but someone objected to the fact that I ask children to bend over and pretend they are picking up trees they chopped down. This person said that telling children to "bend over" could be seen as abuse and that I would have to re-record the CD without those words. I thought the guy was totally insane. Plus I would have to re-do the CD with no labels. The reason why it was so upsetting was because it was going ot be offered as a fundraiser to support the work of someone i appreciate very much. What do you think? Has the expression "bend over" become something that should not be said to children in the middle of a sentence about picking up imaginary trees? very sad
Hello Norah,
I´m not a storyteller, but I do know the importance of telling stories. I heard a native American say we shouldn´t burn oil, but instead wood fire, because this causes families to gather around and tell stories. He also said that objects that have a story behind them are dear to us, whereas accumulating objects through compulsive buying results in emptiness. Doria is my second cousin removed and I am glad she and all of you are working to make this a better world.
Cheers,
James
No, you certainly aren't dumb. There is a large play button in the middle of the photo when you scroll over it; when you click on it it opens up a playlist (and probably begins playing as well).
True dat! But I do not get around much anymore. Never did really. Thinking virtual meetings are better than none.
And the virtual keeps open possibility of f2f in the future, no?
