the living art of storytelling in Massachusetts

90° on a summer afternoon. 50 kids, ranging in age from 3.5 to 11 years old, sit in a busy basement with bells ringing and intercom announcing and other students and staff walking through. Not optimum conditions for listening but this is a story that gets through. Conejito !
By the end summer I will have worked at nearly 45 sites as a storyteller for Read Boston, a literacy program sponsored by the City of Boston. Our performances are 20 - 40 minutes depending on many variables. Dealing well with variables and being flexible are essential qualities for success. Flexibility aside, I enjoy the challenge and love the energy of the children and communities we serve. This is my 10th year with the Storymobile. Many other LANES storytellers participate. The ReadBoston Storymobile will be visiting over 70 locations throughout the city providing kids with fun storytelling events and free books.

Thanks to Sheila Leavitt for her videography, schlepping and excellent company.

Grand Prize for South Shore Grand Slam Story Slam generously donated by Nicolette Heavey and Stories In The Streets (A Maine Get Away)

Stories in the Streets in an outreach literacy program that focuses on families in at-risk areas and fosters community engagement in storytelling by: 1) Creating opportunities for public storytelling wherever families gather — a farmer’s market, laundromat, or food line; and, 2) Offering storytelling workshops that raise family engagement in literacy, cultural awareness and community understanding.  The program is currently active in Lawrence, Brockton and Randolph.
