Event Description

New England Public Radio , the Academy of Music,and massmouth's co founder Andrea Lovett are teaming up to present their first Valley Voices Story Slam at Hinge in Northampton on March 14, 2014 from 7:30pm – 9:30pm. The theme for the first person narrative is “Second Chances.”

Ten storytellers will be selected to share their true story, based on the “Second Chances” theme without notes, and in five minutes.  The audience will choose the winners. The first place winner will be awarded a chance to share their story at the Northeast Storytellers Conference Sharing the Fire, held this year on the UMASS Amherst campus on March 28; four tickets to The Moth Mainstage on April 5th at the Academy (with four passes to the private event reception), and will have their story featured on NEPR’s AudioFiles. Second and third place winners will win tickets to The Moth Mainstage and will also be featured on AudioFiles. 

Interested in telling? Storytellers are asked to call NEPR’s designated phone line at 413-545-0788 and share the first sentence of their story, and their contact information. Phone line will close at 5pm on January 31st.  Ten storytellers will be selected by February 15, 2014 .

Stories in the Streets in an outreach literacy program that focuses on families in at-risk areas and fosters community engagement in storytelling by: 1) Creating opportunities for public storytelling wherever families gather — a farmer’s market, laundromat, or food line; and, 2) Offering storytelling workshops that raise family engagement in literacy, cultural awareness and community understanding.  The program is currently active in Lawrence, Brockton and Randolph.
